Weekly Update 2/4 - 2/8

Hello Families,

Here's what we're working on in class this week:

Math
We are working on ratios this week.  Both classes are studying the exact same content, but with different methods.  There will be a quiz on Friday.

Social Studies
This week we will be studying slavery in the southern colonies.  We will be discussing the origins of slavery, reasons for slavery and how it impacted the economy and  slavery laws.

Science
We are continuing our lessons about watersheds.  Yesterday we learned about what makes a watershed.  We discussed ridge lines and looked at a few maps of the United States to identify the main watersheds in our country.  Please note:  Our science focus at The Headlands is to study watersheds.  The students will have a great opportunity for hands-on work with watersheds.

Reading
As we continue to read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry we are studying the author's use of various literary devices and other tools.  We are also taking a closer look at reading tests to identify the types of questions and how to locate answers in the text.  Essentially, this is preparation for the ERBs in May.  Finally, we are working on our Daily Language Reviews along phonics and word study lessons such as analogies and syllables.

Writing
We are deep into our suspense pieces.  Each day I meet with a few students to assess their progress and offer my insights to improve their piece.  I can't wait to read them all!

Have a wonderful week!

Thanks,
Debby
